Peter Buhler is a native of Switzerland who immigrated to the United States as a young man. He has travelled widely in Europe, the Middle East, Asia, North and Central America and Africa. His graduate studies included teaching fields in Classical Antiquity, European Colonialism, the Middle East, South Asia and Africa. He completed his Doctor of Philosophy degree at the University of California, San Diego in 1975, having written a dissertation on European influences on the Ewe people of Togo in West Africa. His primary research area is Africa and he is currently working on a comparative study of the impact of European and American Imperialism on indigenous peoples.

Since his arrival at Boise State in January 1977, he has taught lower division courses in American, European and Eastern Civilization as well as in the Humanities and currently serves as department chair. At the Upper division level he teaches Africa, South Asia and a Comparative Religions Course. At the graduate level he offers seminars on Modern African and South Asian topics and teaches the Sources of Western Tradition course.
