Hellenistic Sculpture

You should be learning about the Hellenistic Era and the time period covered, and about some of its specific characteristics. Looking at the sculpture of the age provides one type of insight. Take the time to compare these with examples of classical Hellenic sculpture.

In every case, try to find when the sculpture was created, where, etc. Go ahead and find some other examples of Hellenistic art.

This man was a boxer. See the cloth wrapped around his hands?

In all these sculptures, note the position of the body. Are they standing straight and tall?

The Dying Gaul

Who were the Gauls? Why might the artist have chosen them for a subject?

Laocoon

What Greek myth does this represent?

I'm not going to tell you anything about this one.

Or this one, either. But isn't it odd that he's laughing?
