Pazzi Conspiracy
Here's a picture of Lorenzo de' Medici, known as Il Magnifico. You may have heard of him, and you may have even seen his picture before. But you probably haven't seen his kid brother, Giuliano.
They were involved in an incident known as the Pazzi Conspiracy.
There's a picture of a pope here, and a picture of a murder. There's quite a dramatic story associated with these men and with the place depicted in the engraving (the engraving is from a 19th century textbook; like most such pictures, it is highly romanticized, but it's still fun to look at). Many people think of the Renaissance as a time of order and progress and enlightened culture, but there was a dark and violent side to the era, as there is to every era. This particular event touches on many aspects of the Renaissance, good and bad.
