Universities

Universities were invented in the Middle Ages. 

As you can see, they had lecture halls back then, too.  No web sites, though. Servers were too slow. <g>

 


This picture and the one above are both from the University of Bologna, which has as good a claim as any to being the first university. As you learn about cathedral schools and universities, you will learn that the distinctions are rather fine.

But Bologna is interesting in that the students ran the school, not the teachers. The reverse was the model at the University of Paris, another of the earliest of the universities.


This is a rather romantic portrayal of Cambridge.

What sort of things were studied in these early universities? Were they more centers of research and scholarly learning, or more like trade schools?  Now that was a leading question!
