Hanseatic League

You will see the term Hanseatic League, but you will also see Hansa. When you search on "hansa" you will find all sorts of non-medieval references. Those add some interesting color to this trail.

The town of Stettin. What is the modern spelling and why is it spelled differently?

Yeah, OK, it's Stettin again. I just like the picture because above we have the modern town and here we have what is probably a 17th century or so woodcut. The skyline is almost unchanged!

This is Lübeck. Notice the raft on the river and the easy access to the Baltic Sea in the background.

Tip: in German, you can drop the umlaut--those dots--and add an e, for keyboards that can't produce umlauts. Thus, you can type Luebeck.

Sorry for the huge file size, but I love this picture. The grey skies, families in jackets, the medieval market stalls in the background, this is pure Lübeck, and Lübeck is pure Hanseatic.

Room for one more. This is Novgorod. Where is that?  Answer that, and you'll have some sense of the expanse of the Hanseatic League.
