Vikings
Everybody likes to research Vikings, it seems. Which is ironic, since people who were raided by them wanted no part of them.
But now, not only do people study them, they actually try to re-create their boats, and dress up like Vikings. These are real photos!
I rather like this one because it gives a bit of flavor of what a Viking "fleet" might have looked like. Even if only a little bit. Except for the people in the foreground!
It's the Danes and Norwegians who do most of these reconstructions. I think they secretly wish they could go a-viking again!
There's plenty of avenues to explore besides the ships, though. Costumes and dress, the eddas and sagas, and how Vikings managed to make it into the Mediterranean or all the way to the Black Sea. Not to mention how Vikings wound up in the court of the Emperor of Byzantium (try Varangian Guard).
