In the movie Patton, there is a scene where old George S.
takes a detour to view Carthage. The incident in the movie
actually did happen, though probably without the background
music. Patton was a student of the classical generals like
Alexander and Hannibal, and he was more than just a little bit of
a romantic.
So, even as Patton was chasing the Germans across North Africa in
1942, he felt compelled to turn aside and gaze upon Carthage.
There is little enough left now, but we know where the site is
and there is a village nearby by -- something, at least, to gaze
upon. Patton did so, then resumed his chase.
Even today, Hannibal turns up when least expected.
