His book was placed on the Index, a list of books banned by the Church. He himself was placed under permanent house arrest and was forbidden to correspond with friends or, significantly, with any Protestants. He spent the last few years of his life in comparative innocuous isolation.
As he lay dying, however, Galileo supposedly said, "And yet, it does move" —referring, of course, to the Earth. He had been condemned, he had been silenced, but he had not been convinced.
