Shelton Woods received his MA in Chinese History from California State University, Northridge. In 1994 he received his PhD from UCLA in Southeast Asian History. It was also during 1994 that Dr. Woods joined the History Department at Boise State University.

Dr. Woods’ academic interests include East and Southeast Asian history. He teaches upper division courses on the Making of Modern Japan, Modern China, and Modern Southeast Asian History.

In terms of scholarship, Dr. Woods’ articles and reviews appear in various journals and encyclopedias including: Philippine Studies, Contemporary Southeast Asia, Journal of Energy and Development, Business Horizons, Journal of Asian Studies, Journal of World History, Pacific Northwest Quarterly, Journal of Asian Business, the Historian, Journal of Third World Studies, St. Louis Research Journal, Discipliana, Epoche, Filipino American National Historical Society Journal, Education About Asia, Berkshire Dictionary of Chinese Biography, Encyclopedia of China, Encyclopedia of Global Perspectives on the United States, Encyclopedia of Modern Asia, and Encyclopedia of Fundamentalism.

His books include: The Story of Vietnam (Ann Arbor: Association of Asian Studies, 2013); Japan: An Illustrated History (New York: Hippocrene, 2004); Vietnam: A Global Studies Handbook (Santa Barbara: ABC-CLIO, 2002); A Broken Mirror (Quezon City: New Day Publishers, 2002); Vietnam: An Illustrated History (New York: Hippocrene, 2001); Valley County (editor) (Action Publishing Company, 2002).

Dr. Woods was born in the Philippines and moved to the United States in his early twenties to pursue University training.
